Ahead of the 2024 Winter Session of Parliament, Congress called for discussions on several pressing issues, including the bribery charges against the Adani Group, the ongoing crisis in Manipur, severe pollution in northern India and the rising number of train accidents. The demands were raised at the all-party meeting held on Sunday, November 24, where Congress leader Pramod Tiwari urged the government to prioritise these topics during the upcoming session.

Bribery Charges Against Adani Group

A key topic raised by Congress was the recent bribery charges against the Adani Group, brought forward by US prosecutors. The charges allege that the company paid over Rs 2,300 crore in bribes to politicians and bureaucrats to secure favourable deals for its solar energy projects.

Pramod Tiwari emphasised the severity of the issue, highlighting that it involves the nation’s economic and security interests. Congress has called for this matter to be addressed as the first issue when Parliament reconvenes on Monday.

Earlier, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi demanded billionaire Gautam Adani’s immediate arrest. He accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of shielding Gautam Adani from legal consequences. In response, the BJP has criticised the Congress for attempting to destabilise the Indian market and harm the economy. Congress has also called for a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the allegations.

The party also seeks discussions on the severe air pollution crisis in northern India, which has worsened in recent weeks and the alarming rise in train accidents, which have raised concerns about safety on India’s rail network.
