The PM Kisan Yojana, a popular scheme providing Rs 6,000 annually to farmers in three installments, has come under scrutiny as the central government identifies irregularities in multiple beneficiary claims. Media reports indicate that 17 lakh cases nationwide involve both husband and wife receiving benefits, despite the scheme allowing only one member per family.
In this regard, the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has directed state governments to verify families in which more than one member is taking advantage of the scheme.
Out of 31.01 lakh cases examined, 19.02 lakh beneficiaries have been verified, with 17.87 lakh found to be husband-wife pairs. States have been given a deadline of October 15 to submit responses.
While the exact punishment for violating the scheme is yet to be announced, the government may take stringent action against such families.
So far, the government has prioritised farmers who were most affected by the recent floods in the state. The recent floods caused significant losses for some farmers in the state. Keeping this in mind, the government has provided financial assistance by releasing installments to farmers affected by the floods.

The 21st installment of the PM Kisan Yojana has been disbursed in advance, providing Rs 170 crore to more than 8.5 lakh farmers affected by the natural disaster.
According to media reports, the government may release the upcoming installment for farmers in other states before Diwali, providing timely financial assistance ahead of the festive season.
