Prime Minister Narendra Modi put shoes on the feet of a person, who remained barefooted for over 14 years, during an event in Haryana’s Yamunanagar. Rampal Kashyap, who belongs to Kheri Gulam Ali Village in Kaithal district, made a vow to not wear shoes until the Bharatiya Janata Party formed the government at the centre and Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister.

Kashyap was adamant about fulfilling his pledge as he remained barefooted even during scorching summers, freezing winters and even rains.

“Today I am putting shoes on your feet. Please don’t ever do such a thing again. We should work, but not cause ourselves suffering,” PM Modi said while putting shoes on Rampal’s feet.

Rampal, visibly emotional, said he had never imagined he would ever get to meet PM Modi, to which the latter responded, “Your determination was unwavering.”

This meeting was made possible through the efforts of Rajya Sabha Member Rekha Sharma. She had met Rampal the previous week at a felicitation program held at the Brahmin Dharamshala in Guhla. After hearing his story, she recorded a video and sent it to the Prime Minister’s Office.

Rampal, a farm labourer, claims he has been associated with the BJP since the age of 14—making it a 40-year-long association. He currently resides in the Komboopura Colony of Karnal. Speaking to Dainik Jagran, Rampal explained that in 2012, he took a vow not to wear shoes until Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister and he got to meet him personally.

Although Modi became Prime Minister in 2014, Rampal remained barefoot because he had resolved to wear shoes only after meeting him in person. He had informed various government and party officials about his vow over the years, but the opportunity never arose. When Rekha Sharma visited Guhla last week, he finally got a chance to share his story. She recorded a video and assured him she would arrange a meeting with the Prime Minister. On the evening of April 12, around 4:30 PM, Rampal received a call from the Prime Minister’s Office, instructing him to come to Yamunanagar.
