Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his 'Mann Ki Baat' address on Sunday, urged citizens to download and use the 'Sachet' mobile application launched by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to stay safe during natural disasters. Speaking in his monthly 'Mann Ki Baat' address, he stated the importance of alertness and said the app can play a vital role in keeping people informed and protected.
The ‘Sachet’ app provides real-time, geo-tagged early warning alerts for various natural disasters such as floods, cyclones, landslides, tsunamis, forest fires, avalanches, storms, hurricanes, and lightning. PM Modi noted that the app offers information not only in English and Hindi but also in several regional languages, making it accessible to people across the country. He encouraged citizens to use the app and share their experiences.
"The most important thing in dealing with any natural disaster is your alertness. You can now get help with this alertness from a special APP on your mobile. This APP can save you from getting trapped in any natural disaster and its name too is Sachet," the prime minister said during his address.
The app, based on the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP), issues alerts from authorised government sources to warn the public about potential disaster situations. It also offers weather reports and forecasts from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
Along with practical resources such as Dos and Don’ts, helpline numbers, affected area maps, and satellite receiver connectivity. Users can opt to receive alerts for their current location or subscribe to alerts for any other state or district.
During the broadcast, PM Modi also spoke about Operation Brahma, India’s humanitarian mission launched to support earthquake-affected areas in Myanmar. He praised the Indian team for setting up a field hospital, assessing damage to infrastructure, and distributing relief materials like blankets, tents, medicines, and food supplies.
