Prime Minister's Office Name Change: The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has been officially renamed 'Seva Teerth', the Centre announced on Tuesday.

The decision is reportedly a part of the central government’s ongoing push to shed colonial-era names and symbols. The PMO will soon move to a new building, which will also be called Seva Teerth.

This comes weeks after several Raj Bhavans across states were renamed Lok Bhavan under the same drive to replace imperial-sounding titles with more people-centric ones.

Public Institutions Under Profound Shift?

The word ‘Sewa’ means service, and the new name of the PM’s office is rooted in the spirit of ‘service’. As per officials, the 'Seva Teerth' will be a workplace designed to reflect the spirit of service and where national priorities take shape.

According to a report by the news agency PTI, the officials further said that India's public institutions were undergoing a quiet but profound shift.

Pointing towards a deeper shift through renaming, the officials said governance is no longer about ‘satta’ (power) but about ‘seva’ (service), and no longer about authority but about responsibility. They added that the change is not just administrative — it is a cultural and moral transformation in how the government sees its role.

The new complex, where the PM’s office will be shifted, is in the final stages of construction and will be completed soon. The complex was earlier known as the 'Executive Enclave' under the Central Vista Redevelopment project.

New PMO Complex To Feature 'India House'

Along with PMO, the new complex will also house the offices of the Cabinet Secretariat, National Security Council Secretariat and India House. The India house will be a place where high-level talks will be held and where visiting dignitaries will be received.

From ‘Satta’ To ‘Seva’

The residences of governors in states are also being renamed as Lok Bhavan from Raj Bhavan. "Every name, every building and every symbol now points to a simple idea. Government exists to serve," they said.

Earlier, the government of India changed the name of the tree-lined avenue from Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate, from Rajpath to Kartavya Path.

PM’s Residence Renamed Kalyan Marg

The journey began in 2016 when the Prime Minister’s official residence, once called Race Course Road, was renamed Lok Kalyan Marg, a name that speaks of public welfare instead of privilege.

The Central Secretariat buildings have been rechristened Kartavya Bhavan, symbolising that every desk inside exists not for power, but for duty and public service.

"These changes mark a deeper ideological transition. Indian democracy is choosing responsibility over power and service over status," the officials said, adding, "A shift in names is also a shift in mindset. Today, they speak the language of seva, kartavya and citizen-first governance," the officials said.
