President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday launched the Indian Navy’s advanced stealth frigate INS Vindhyagiri at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited in Kolkata. Vindhyagiri is named after the mountain range in Karnataka just like its predecessors, INS Nilgiri, Udaygiri, Taragiri, Himgiri, and Dunagiri.
Vindhyagiri is the sixth ship of the Project 17 A program of the Indian Navy. The first five ships of the project were launched between 2019 and 2022 by Mazagon Dock Ltd (MDL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE).

- These warships represent the advancement from the Project 17 Class Frigates (Shivalik Class) with advanced weapons, sensors, and platform management systems.

- The newly designated Vindhyagiri stands as a symbol of India’s determination to embrace its historic naval heritage while advancing towards a future of indigenous defence capabilities, the Ministry of Defence said.
- These Project 17-A ships have been designed in-house by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, which is the pioneer organisation of all warship design activities.
- Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) supplied steel comprising DMR 249 A-grade HR Sheets and Plates for the Vindhyagiri frigate. "Under the ambit of Project P17A, a vital endeavour that envisions the launch of seven ships, the upcoming launch of "Vindhyagiri" marks the successful construction of the sixth ship," officials said, as quoted by news agency ANI.
- The Indian Navy said that indigenous enterprises, including Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), have placed a substantial 75 per cent of orders for Project 17A ship equipment and systems.
- According to a GRSE official, the P17A ships are guided missile frigates that are 149 metres long, with a displacement of around 6,670 tonnes, and travel at a speed of 28 knots.
