A major political firestorm has sent shockwaves in the politics of Maharashtra after Deputy CM Ajit Pawar's son, Parth Pawar, came to the centre of an alleged land scam in Pune, where a 40-acre government-owned plot in the Koregaon Park area was sold for Rs 300 crore despite its estimated worth being around Rs 1,300 crore.
As the controversy escalated, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis ordered a high-level probe under Additional Chief Secretary Vikas Kharge. He described the issue as "prima facie serious."
The government also suspended a sub-registrar, Ravindra Taru, after an interim report under the Inspector General of Registration highlighted lapses in procedures and a possible collusion.
What is the scam and how is Parth Pawar involved?
According to the information, the cost of 40-acre land is estimated to be around Rs 1,800 crore. It was reportedly sold for just Rs 300 crore to Amadea Enterprises LLP, a company in which Parth Pawar is a partner.
Additionally, the allegations are that a stamp duty of Rs 21 crore was also waived off, and only Rs 500 was paid at the time of registration.
Originally, the piece of land was government-owned Mahar Vatan land and had complicated ownership and transfer restrictions.
The land was then leased to the Indian Botanical Survey, a government body, which brought it under government possession.
According to allegations, the transfer bypassed mandatory state approval, and the stamp duty waiver resulted in severe losses to public finances.
How did Ajit Pawar, opposition react?
Reacting to the controversy, Ajit Pawar has denied his involvement, saying that he will not tolerate wrongdoing by anyone, including his son.
On the other hand, the opposition has accused the government of trying to protect Parth Pawar, as his name was omitted in the FIR. Congress even demanded the resignation of Ajit Pawar and a criminal case against Parth.
