In a major announcement, Punjab BJP chief Kewal Singh Dhillon on Monday quelled the speculations about an alliance with Akali Dal, asserting that the party will contest all 117 assembly seats alone.

Dhillon made the statement while he was in Rupnagar to participate in the Tiranga Yatra. On being asked about the possibility of an alliance following the meeting of Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Badal with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Dhillon said, "The Prime Minister belongs to everyone. He belongs to Sukhbir Badal as well. Sukhbir is a big leader of Punjab and the Akali Dal."

He must have discussed Punjab issues during his meeting with the Prime Minister. In response to a question about illegal mining at the press conference, the BJP state president said that it is no secret that Rupnagar has become a mining hub in Punjab, where mining is rampant and unrestrained even during the rainy season.

When asked about the BJP's stand on the demand of several political parties for granting parole to Jagtar Singh Hawara from jail, Dhillon said that his party stands with the people of Punjab and whatever stand the party high command takes will be in the interest of Punjab.

Another loan of Rs 1,000 crore

Four years ago, after sixty years of government, the state was in debt of Rs 2.5 lakh crore, which has now doubled to Rs 4.5 lakh crore rupees, he said while targeting the CM Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party government. The troubling aspect is that the state government has taken on a further loan of Rs 1,000 crore, he added.

BJP District President Ajayveer Singh Lalpura and other senior district leaders were also present during the meeting.

On Friday, SAD chief Sukhbir Badal reached the Parliament and met PM Modi at his office. While leaders from both parties remained tight-lipped and called it a courtesy meeting, there were reports that a discussion on a pre-poll alliance was held between the two leaders. The Assembly elections in Punjab are slated to be held next year.
