Punjab Floods: At least 29 people have died and 2.56 lakh people have been displaced as Punjab faces one of its worst flood disasters in decades, triggered by heavy rainfall. Twelve districts, including Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Fazilka, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Hoshiarpur, and Amritsar, have been severely affected. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for 12 out of the 23 districts in the state, as continuous heavy rain and flooding caused by swelling rivers and rivulets have thrown daily life into chaos.
Relief and rescue operations are underway at full scale, led by the NDRF, Army, BSF, Punjab Police, and local authorities, with thousands evacuated and housed in relief camps. All colleges and schools in Punjab have been closed amid incessant rains and floods. Acres of agricultural land have also been damaged.
Punjab Crops Damaged
This state has been severely affected, with floods damaging crops across nearly 3 lakh acres of farmland and submerging 1,018 villages. The state is facing heavy financial losses, with preliminary reports showing that Fazilka district alone has lost over 41,099 acres of agricultural land. Other districts, including Ferozepur, Kapurthala, Pathankot, and Hoshiarpur, have also reported extensive crop destruction spanning thousands of hectares.
Punjab-Flood Latest Updates
1. PM Modi spoke to CM Bhagwant Mann on Monday evening, the first official outreach from the Centre since the floods began a week ago. He assured full support to Punjab, officials told PTI.
2. Over 1,300 villages remain submerged, with 6,582 people shifted to 122 relief camps. Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Fazilka, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Hoshiarpur, and Amritsar are among the worst-hit districts.
3. Heavy rains in the hill states have caused the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers, along with smaller rivulets, to overflow. In some areas, the Ravi has swelled to ten times its usual width, flooding homes and croplands, and displacing thousands.
4. Rescue operations led by the NDRF, Army, BSF, and local authorities have saved 14,936 people so far. Drones are being used to supply water, milk powder, and dry rations to cut-off villages in Ajnala.
5. Hoshiarpur faced severe damage on Monday, with floodwaters entering homes in several villages. Many families are living in tractor-trolleys near their fields and livestock, preferring not to shift to relief camps.
6. During his visit to Hoshiarpur, CM Mann called the disaster the “worst floods in recent history” and promised that every possible effort would be made to help people.
7. Mann also said he has written to PM Modi, seeking release of Rs 60,000 crore in “pending state funds” from the Centre for relief and rehabilitation.
8. Political sparring has intensified. Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema accused the Centre of ignoring Punjab’s suffering, questioning PM Modi’s silence.
9. Cheema also criticised Home Minister Amit Shah for not announcing any relief package or releasing pending funds despite the scale of destruction.
10. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi posted on X that the crisis demands a “mission mode” response and urged immediate assistance for farmers, labourers, livestock owners, and ordinary citizens.
