Two months after allegedly being pushed into a canal and presumed dead, a 17-year-old girl returned alive in Punjab's Ferozpur, demanding the release of his father, who was accused of killing her.
The girl appeared on a local digital media channel and asserted that her father was innocent, and it was her mother who motivated him to commit the crime by persistent instigation.
She also demanded the release of her father and action against her mother. She called her a true culprit in the case. She, however, refused to provide any details about how she escaped the canal. She also didn't tell where she was hiding for the past two months.
The incident took place on October 3 when her father, Surjit Singh, allegedly tied her hands and pushed her into the Rajasthan canal as he was suspicious of her character. The entire episode was filmed by Singh.
The video showing the mother of the girl pleading for her life went viral on social media. The authorities launched a massive search, but the body was not found.
Police arrested Singh based on the video, and he was presented before the court, from where he was sent to judicial custody.
After resurfacing, the girl asserted that she would disclose her full story from escape to hiding only when her father is present in the court on the next hearing.
Her mother, when contacted by the media regarding her daughter's allegations, declined to speak.
The police have also taken note of the video. Bhupinder Singh Sidhu, senior superintendent of police (SSP), Ferozepur, said that the priority of the police is to check the authenticity of the video. He said, "Police will first check the authenticity of the video and will only act after recording the girl's official statement."
