A 21-year-old man from Punjab's Ludhiana went to Russia for a job. His body, covered in a coffin, returned to India eight months later. The ordeal dates back to July 2025, when Samarjit Singh traveled to Russia with dreams of a high-paying job overseas. According to the deceased's family, some recruitment agents lured him with a foreign job and good pay scale; Singh agreed to their offer. However, upon arrival, he was conscripted into the Russian army.
The family claimed that Singh received no military training before being sent for the war. The relatives last contacted him in September 2025. A few days later, he was untraceable.
Singh's body arrived at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport on Thursday. The remains were then sent to Ludhiana to perform the last rites.
Victim’s Father Urges People To Not To Believe Agents
Singh's father, Charanjit Singh, while performing his son's last rites, urged all Indian parents to not send their children overseas on false claims of agents. The father who owns a grocery store in the Amarapani area struggled to hold his tears.
"I appeal to everyone: do not put your children's lives at risk out of the temptation to send them abroad through agents," he said. "No matter how dire your financial circumstances may be, do not take such a step. I have lost everything," NDTV reported.
The deceased youth's family said how they spent months pleading for help to the Russian officials. His father claimed that Samarjit's decision to leave was driven solely by the desire to assist the family. "Had there been employment opportunities here, my son would never have gone abroad. He went because he wanted to help us," he said.
The father said they do not even know what happened to him in his last moments.
