Cold Wave Grips Punjab: Schools Closed From December 24; Flights Cancelled, Delayed Amid Fog

Punjab Weather: According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that a western disturbance is becoming active from December 18. Following this, the cold will intensify in Punjab. Meanwhile, the Punjab government has announced winter school holidays for educational institutions. Schools will remain closed from December 24 to 31.

Bathinda was the coldest in the state on Monday with a minimum temperature of 4.8 degrees Celsius. According to IMD, dense fog is expected in several districts on Tuesday.

Dense fog in Punjab also impacted air services. 19 flights were affected at Amritsar Airport on Monday, with Air India's flight to Delhi and AirAsia's flight to Kullu cancelled.

Punjab Weather: Flights Cancelled And Delayed

Indigo's 6:35 am flight from Delhi landed in Amritsar about six hours later at 12:29 pm. Air India's 7:05 am flight was cancelled on Monday. Spice Jet's Dubai flight departed at 11:57 am instead of 8:50 am, Air India's Delhi flight departed at 4:27 pm instead of 10:30 am, Indigo's Delhi flight departed at 4:57 pm instead of 10:40 am, Air India's Delhi flight scheduled for 1:20 pm departed at 5:46 pm, Air India's Birmingham flight departed at 2:24 pm instead of 1:25 pm, Air India's Mumbai flight departed at 4:39 pm instead of 1:45 pm. Similarly, flights to Amritsar were also delayed. At Chandigarh airport also, two Indigo flights were affected due to fog and had to be cancelled.

IMD forecast dense to very dense fog in the morning hours of December 16 and 17 across isolated areas of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Dense fog is also likely to prevail in many regions of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday.

In view of the adverse weather conditions, IMD has issued an orange alert for a cold wave in parts of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and southern Uttar Pradesh.
