The Punjab government on Thursday approved the conduct of Panchayat District Council elections. The Rural Development and Panchayat Department has issued a notification in this regard. These elections have been overdue for more than a year.

According to the notice, the elections are scheduled to take place before May 31. The previous elections– for 23 Zila Parishads and 153 Panchayat Samitis, also known as Block Samitis– were held in September 2018.

Since wheat harvesting occurs in April, the elections will likely be held after May 20. These elections will be conducted across all 23 districts of Punjab.

It is most likely that the government will wait for the board exams to conclude in March, as the teachers who are assigned election duty will be occupied during that period.

During the last time, AAP performed exceptionally well and swayed over these bodies. It will try to repeat its performance, riding high on its victory in the urban civic polls

Earlier, Punjab AAP chief Aman Arora highlighted the party's overall performance in urban civic polls, claiming that AAP won 522 of the 961 wards across five corporations, municipal councils and nagar panchayats.

“This means 55% of the total wards are under AAP control, compared to Congress’s 20% (191 wards) and the BJP and SAD’s 7% (69 wards) and 3% (31 wards), respectively,” Arora said.

AAP won the municipal elections in Patiala but fell short of a majority in the Ludhiana and Jalandhar municipal corporations even though it emerged as the largest parties in the two civic bodies. In Phagwara and Amritsar, the Congress performed well and emerged as the largest party in the municipal corporations.
