Several rules, impacting finances, travel and other daily activities, will change from today across departments in India. As per the new directive issued by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), an Aadhaar card has been made mandatory to apply for a PAN card. The existing PAN cardholders have also been asked to get it linked to Aadhaar by December 31 or face deactivation.

In a big relief to the taxpayers, the last date to file the Income Tax Returns (ITR) has been extended from July 31 to September 15.

Indian Railways has introduced strict ticket booking norms starting July 1. Aadhaar verification has been made mandatory from today for Tatkal ticket bookings. Besides, from July 15 onwards, two-factor authentication via OTP will be required for all bookings.

Railway fares have also been slightly hiked, which will come into force from today. Under the new fare policy, ticket prices have increased by 1 paisa per kilometre in non-AC coaches and 2 paisa per kilometre in AC coaches. However, this policy will only be implemented for distances beyond 500 km. Fares for people travelling a distance less than 500 km will remain unchanged.

In the banking sector, SBI, HDFC and ICICI banks have implemented a new credit card and ATM usage policies. SBI has removed air accident insurance benefits from its premium cards and revised the minimum amount due calculation.

HDFC has introduced a 1 per cent transaction fee on rent payments, online gaming (above Rs 10,000), utility bills (over Rs 50,000) and wallet loads (above Rs 10,000), capped at Rs 4,999 per transaction.

ICICI Bank now allows five free ATM withdrawals at its own ATMs, post which Rs 23 per transaction will be charged. Withdrawals at other ATMs are limited to three (metro) or five (non-metro) free transactions, with charges of Rs 23 for cash and Rs 8.5 for non-financial transactions. Axis Bank has also increased ATM fees beyond free limits.

To tackle pollution in the national capital, the Delhi Government has banned fuel refills for End-of-Life (EoL) vehicles. Over 520 fuel stations in Delhi are now equipped with ANPR cameras that verify vehicles via the VAHAN database.
