A disturbing video from the Erode-Jogbani Amrit Bharat Express (16601) has surfaced, showing a man cleaning used disposable food containers, allegedly for reuse. The footage has raised several concerns about hygiene and food safety practices on Indian trains.

Indian Railways has implemented several measures to enhance food safety, including installing CCTV cameras in kitchens to oversee meal preparation. Additionally, all catering units need to be certified by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Routine audits are also conducted to maintain hygiene and quality.

But the incident has once again put these problems in the spotlight. In response to the video, railway authorities have taken swift action. The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) stated on X (formerly Twitter): “Taking the matter very seriously, the vendor involved has been identified and immediately removed. The process of cancelling the license of the licensee is in progress, and a substantial fine is also being imposed.”

How Did The Social Media React?

The video has attracted strong reactions from the netizens on X (formerly Twitter). One user wrote, “Washing used containers in a train sink, then serving food again, is filth disguised as service in Express trains. This is how standards collapse as management turns blind, passengers get sick & nobody is held to account. This country deserves real hygiene, not this public health disaster.”

Another user tagged the Railway Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, and the official handle of Indian Railways, and stated that issues with contractors are becoming a serious concern. He also highlighted the fact that social media is flooded with complaints about poor food quality, overpriced items, and even instances of vendors reportedly harassing passengers.

A third user raised a pertinent question on his social media and wrote, “Where are they finding used containers....don't people throw them in the dustbin after using?”
