In a bid to ensure smooth connectivity, the Indian Railways is now making preparations to extend rail services to the Line of Control in the Uri (Baramulla) sector. The railway project is expected to become a catalyst for socio-economic giving a major boost to the economy in the state.

Besides the economy, the railway project is crucial for the rapid supply of military personnel and equipment to the border area of the LoC. The railway line will traverse through key areas like Sheeri, Gantmulla, Boniyar, Limber, Naugram, and Lagama. The line will also help freight services to reach Delhi from Uri in 24 hrs. Currently, freight services take around four to seven days by road to reach Delhi.
