Rains Of Gurugram: Waterlogging in the Millennium City, Gurugram - earlier known as Gurgaon - is a perennial issue. Globally recognised as an MNC-industry hub, Gurugram has been losing its reputation for the past couple of years due to waterlogging. This monsoon season, 159 locations in Gurugram experienced waterlogging. Every year during the Monsoon, the city turns into a submerged town. From MP, MLA, and Mayor to all civic bodies, keep promising people of Gurugram to make the city free from waterlogging, but the story remains the same every year. The encroachments, garbage dumping, and poor maintenance of roads often choke the drainage system of the city, causing a flood-like situation.

Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority's Stand

The Daily Jagran spoke RS Jangra, Chief Engineer, GMDA. He said, “The GMDA worked on the master sewer programme ahead of the Monsoon to clean the master drain and roads and narrow lanes. Our staff remove garbages from the drain, which is why water could not stay and drained out soon after the rains in the city.” On the question, why Gurugram saw waterlogging despite all the cleaning drives, “Thore samay me jayeda barish hone par pani ruk jata h, but thaharata nahi (When there is heavy rain in a short time, the water stops flowing, but it does not stop)."

Local Journalist On Who Is Responsible For The Waterlogging Menace

To understand the ground reality, The Daily Jagran spoke to local journalist Jacqueline Jindal. She highlighted the core issue, saying waterlogging in Gurgaon exposes deep flaws in civic infrastructure and governance. Stressing that responsibility must be fixed among municipal corporations for poor drainage maintenance, urban planners for unscientific development, and builders for prioritising real estate over infrastructure, Jindal said encroachment on natural water channels and wetlands has worsened the problem.

Here Are Major Causes Of Waterlogging

- Drains passing near other illegal colonies, including those located within the 900-meter restricted area of the Ordnance Depot, have been encroached upon. This has led to blockages.

- The authority said that it had conducted 120 anti-encroachment drives since December 2024 and about 130 acres of government land have been cleared.

- There are approximately 950 milk dairies in the city. Dairy waste is also being dumped into the drains.

- Drainage is hampered due to lack of cleaning and encroachment of drains.

- Sewer connections have also been illegally connected to storm drains at many locations.

- Lack of dustbins in the vulnerable locations causes scattered garbage, which enters the sewer.
