Rajasthan News: A woman dressed her younger son in women’s attire, adorned him with jewellery and makeup and clicked his photographs before the entire family of four ended their lives by jumping into a water tank near their home in Rajasthan’s Barmer district.
The incident took place on Tuesday evening, but came to light early Wednesday morning when the bodies were recovered. The deceased have been identified as Shivlal Meghwal (35), his wife Kavita (32) and their two sons—Bajrang (9) and Ramdev (8).

According to initial police findings, Kavita placed a dupatta on Ramdev’s head, applied kajal to his eyes, put a tilak on his forehead, and made him wear her gold jewellery. She then clicked his pictures. Soon after, the family reportedly walked to a water tank located about 20 metres from their house and jumped in.
Locals were alerted when Shivlal’s younger brother failed to reach him by phone and sent a neighbour to check on them. When no one responded, authorities were informed and the bodies were recovered in the presence of extended family members the following morning.
Police recovered a handwritten suicide note from the house, reportedly written by Shivlal. The note, dated June 29, named three individuals as responsible for the family’s decision to take this extreme step—one of them being Shivlal’s own younger brother. The note alleged long-standing disputes over shared property and household rights and mentioned the opposition Shivlal faced when trying to build a house using funds sanctioned under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).

Kavita’s uncle told police that Shivlal was constantly harassed by his family members over land-related issues, which may have led to the act. On the day of the incident, Shivlal’s mother was visiting his brother in Barmer and his father was attending a religious function—leaving the house empty.
The suicide note also requested that the last rites of all four be performed in front of their home. Police have launched a detailed investigation and are questioning family members and neighbours. Further action may be taken against those named in the note.
