Amid the special discussion on the Constitution in the Lok Sabha on Friday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh attacked Congress and slammed it for trying to 'hijack' the creation of India's Constitution, adding that it is not the gift of a single party but was made by the people of the country.
Rajnath began his speech by congratulating the House and the citizens of the country on the completion of 75 years of the adoption of the Constitution. Further launching a scathing attack at Congress, he said, "there has always been an attempt by a particular party to hijack the work of Constitution-making. Our Constitution is not the gift of a single party. It was made by the people of India, embodying the values and aspirations of this diverse nation."
Further attacking the grand old party, Singh said that every time when it had the opportunity to choose between Constitution and power, Congress never missed a chance to favour power.
"On many occasions, the Congress has disrespected the Constitution and its spirit. It could not tolerate the independence and autonomy of institutions. It always tried to destroy the basic principles of the Constitution," he alleged.

The defence minister went on saying that the Indian Constitution continues to play an important role in maintaining the world's largest democracy without losing its basic spirit and despite all the challenges.
"We all accept the role of the Supreme Court as the custodian and interpreter of the Constitution. Today there is talk of protecting the Constitution. This is the duty of all of us. But we also need to understand who has respected the Constitution and who has disrespected it," he added.
The defence minister further said that the BJP has never played with the independence, and autonomy of institutions, adding that the saffron regiment bows before the Constitution.
He further hit out at Rahul Gandhi, without taking his name, and said that many opposition leaders roam with copies of the Constitution in their pockets, which they have doing since childhood.

"Opposition leaders have seen generations of their families keeping Constitution copies in their pockets," he said.
"Congress disrespected Constitution on several occasions; always sought committed judiciary, institutions. destroyed basic spirit of Constitution and words like protecting the Constitution do not suit them," Singh added.
