Rajya Sabha Elections: Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday released a list of 11 candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections, slated to be held on June 18. Among the candidates is the party's national general secretary, Tarun Chugh. Chugh has been fielded from Madhya Pradesh.
State-wise candidates list
- Arunachal Pradesh: Tai Tagak
- Gujarat: Rajubhai Shukla, Mukeshbhai Rathwa, Mansigh Parmar, Jitendra Meghjibhai Kanzariya
- Madhya Pradesh: Tarun Chugh and Rajneesh Agrawal
- Manipur: A Sharda Devi
- Rajasthan: Dr Alka Gurjar, Dr Satish Poonia
- Odisha (By-election): Debashish Samantaray
As many as 27 seats of the Upper House from 10 states are set to go to the polls on June 18. The BJP currently has 113 seats out of a total strength of 245, while the NDA collectively has 148 seats.
Equations in state
The list does not include names from Andhra Pradesh so far, where the BJP is an ally of the TDP and the Jan Sena Party and the ruling NDA is set for major gains. In Andhra Pradesh, four seats, three with YSRCP and one with TDP, are falling vacant. Since NDA has 164 seats in the assembly out of 175, it is set to win all four seats.
In Gujarat, four seats are falling vacant, out of which three are with the BJP and one with Congress's Shaktisinh Gohil. The quota to win a seat is 37, and Congress has only 17 seats in the assembly. Hence, all four seats are set to go with the BJP.
In Rajasthan, the BJP has a comfortable number to win two seats, while one is likely to go with Congress. In Madhya Pradesh, the current scenario of two BJP seats and one Congress seat is most likely to continue as the grand old party has 69 seats in the assembly against a quota of 51.
In Odisha, the by-election was necessitated due to Samantaray's exit from Biju Janta Dal (BJD) and Rajya Sabha resignation. He has now secured his reentry in the Rajya Sabha through a bypoll on a BJP ticket.
