The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) introduced an update to the FasTag regulations by revising its e-mandate framework. This new framework allows for the automatic deposit of funds into FasTag and the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), eliminating the need for users to manually recharge their accounts. This change is expected to streamline the payment process for users and provide greater convenience.

With the implementation of this facility, users will no longer need to spend time recharging their FasTag or NCMC when the balance runs low. The system will now handle recharges automatically, sparing users the hassle of manually topping up through apps. This automation will save time and alleviate the worry of running out of balance while on the road.

Following the RBI's update to the e-mandate framework, users can activate this automatic recharge feature by contacting their bank or FasTag service provider. Additionally, users have the flexibility to set their preferred recharge amount and frequency, ensuring that their FasTag is used according to their needs. When the Fastag or NCMC balance decreases, the linked bank account will automatically recharge it.

RBI has clarified that under the e-mandate framework, users will receive a notification at least 24 hours in advance whenever funds are debited from their bank account and deposited into the Fastag card.

What is an E-Mandate?

E-mandate is a digital payment service that allows customers to authorise their bank to automatically debit a predetermined amount to another account or payment at a specified time. Introduced by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), this service simplifies payment processes by eliminating the need for paperwork, making transactions faster and more efficient.

What is FasTag?

FasTag is a cashless toll payment system using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. The Fastag sticker is placed on the vehicle's windscreen and scanners at toll plazas read the RFID chip to deduct the toll amount directly from the linked prepaid account. This system enables toll payments without requiring vehicles to stop at the toll plaza.
