"Today marks the final day of my nine-year tenure as the chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW). These nine years have been like a roller coaster ride for me. Coming from a humble background to finishing three terms in the NCW is a long way I have walked," she wrote on X.
"This journey is far too rich and profound to capture in a page or two; it would require a few books to do it justice. Along the way, I received an abundance of love, and I also learned how to handle criticism, which is an inevitable part of any work of this stature. Social media, with its freedom, can be ruthless at times, with people passing judgment without truly knowing you or your work. I wish they had taken the time to understand my efforts and intentions better," she added.
She hoped that the women commission would continue to thrive and make even greater strides under new leadership.
"As I step down from this role, I carry with me cherished memories and a profound sense of fulfillment. I am confident that the NCW will continue to thrive and make even greater strides under new leadership," he added.
During her tenure, Sharma was a vocal advocate for gender sensitisation of the police force, emphasising their crucial role as the first point of contact for victims. She worked tirelessly to address issues of women's safety and empowerment, often finding herself at the center of controversies.
One of the most recent controversies was the alleged non-action in Manipur. She was often accused of not taking sufficient action in non-BJP-ruled states, a charge she strongly denied, asserting that the NCW's actions were guided by the needs of the victims, regardless of political affiliations.
