Delhi Police on Thursday said that it had beefed up security across Delhi ahead of Republic Day celebrations. According to a senior police officer, more than 8,000 police officers have already been stationed in the national capital for the parade on January 26.

Officials on night patrol have been instructed to inspect lodging establishments, guest houses, and dharamshalas.

The police officer stated that they are examining the security protocols in place at these establishments, especially those close to interstate bus terminals and railroad stations, as well as their documentation to determine who is traveling to the nation's capital and why.

According to police, anyone found to be in violation of section 188 of the Indian Penal Code—which prohibits disobedience to an order duly issued by a public servant—will face consequences.

“Recently, when our team was checking a hotel in Paharganj, it found there were no security arrangements. An FIR was registered against the owner of the hotel,” the police officer said.

Strict guidelines for tenant and servant verification, border checks, security of critical infrastructure, malls and markets, and patrolling in high-traffic areas have been issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The Delhi border areas and the CCTV control room at key locations are under strict police observation, according to the police.

“We have intensified patrolling in public places. Group patrolling, night patrolling and vehicle checking are being carried out at different places. A double-layer security will be there at bus stands and railway stations,” the police officer said.

The Delhi Police is testing its response readiness in the interim by holding simulated exercises.

“Drills have been conducted on how to control riot-like situation…use water cannon to tackle any situation,” another officer said.
