Republic Day 2026: India celebrated its 77th Republic Day on January 26, 2026, with a grand parade at Kartavya Path near India Gate in New Delhi. President Droupadi Murmu presided over the event, with the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen as chief guests.

The Republic Day celebrations began with Prime Minister Narendra Modi visiting the National War Memorial to lay a wreath and pay tribute to fallen soldiers before joining other dignitaries at the saluting dais at Kartavya Path.

President Murmu, along with the Chief Guests of Republic Day 2026, arrived at the dais in a traditional buggy, escorted by the President’s Bodyguard, the senior-most regiment of the Indian Army.

As per tradition, the national flag was unfurled at the saluting dais, followed by the national anthem and a 21-gun salute. The salute was fired using 105 mm light field guns by the 1721 Ceremonial Battery of the 172 Field Regiment.

The theme for this year’s Republic Day celebrations was “150 Years of Vande Mataram,” commemorating the anniversary of the iconic national song by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. Kartavya Path was elaborately decorated to showcase India’s cultural heritage, development journey, and military prowess.

Visuals shared by the news agency PTI showed structured march pasts by contingents from the Indian Armed Forces and paramilitary units, displaying ceremonial uniforms, medals, and regimental colours. The grand parade also featured a phased battle array format by the Indian Army, including an aerial component. Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopters carrying the flag of Operation Sindoor were among the most striking spectacles during the 77th Republic Day celebrations.

A total of 30 tableaux,17 from States and Union Territories and 13 from Ministries, Departments, and Services, added colour and vibrancy to the parade. Similar Republic Day celebrations were held across the country, with governors and chief ministers hoisting the national flag.

The Republic Day Parade concluded with the singing of the national anthem, followed by the release of balloons and a banner bearing the words “Vande Mataram” at Kartavya Path.
