Republic Day Weather Update: Delhites woke up to another chilly morning on Republic Day amidst cold wave conditions in Delhi-NCR. Several flight operations were affected as dense fog continued to grip the national capital. According to the India Meteorological Department, people in Delhi and parts of north India will continue to bear the cold and dense fog for a few more days.
As per the weather department, Delhi will see a partly cloudy sky and moderate fog in the morning with the maximum and minimum temperatures likely to settle around 20 and 5 degrees Celsius, respectively. On Thursday, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 4.8 degrees Celsius, three notches below the season's average, the IMD said in its bulletin.

Earlier, the weather forecasting department predicted that visibility would be limited to 400 meters on Friday until 8:30 AM. Thereafter it will improve to 1,500 metres by 10:30 AM.
According to the IMD, one of the main causes of the blinding layer of fog that has been covering the plains in the area since December 25 is the lack of active western disturbances, which are meteorological systems that originate in the Mediterranean region and deliver unseasonal rainfall to northwest India. The lack of active western disturbances can also be attributed to the prevailing El-Nino conditions and abnormal warming of surface waters in the central Pacific Ocean.
