RG Kar Case: A local court is set to deliver its verdict on the hyped Kolkata's RG Kar rape and murder case of a trainee doctor on Saturday. The murder of an on-duty doctor at the hospital led to massive nationwide outrage and protests. The court is likely to deliver its verdict on Civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, the key accused in the RG Kar case. The case had earlier shook the country and several civil societies protested against the alleged mismanagement of the case.
Here are the latest updates in the case:
1. Apart from the verdict on the role of Sanjay Roy, the court is expected to release verdict on the allegations of evidence tampering during the investigation by Kolkata Police. The parents of the trainee doctor had accused the police of tampering with evidences.
2. Upon the allegations of tampering of evidences by the state police, the Calcutta High Court later transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The CBI identified Sanjay Roy as the "sole prime accused" in its chargesheet.
3. Ghosh was arrested by the Kolkata Police a day after the body of the deceased was recovered from the seminar hall of the medical college in August 2024.
4. The central agency arrested the former principal of the medical college Sandip Ghosh and former local police station officer Abhijit Mondal for allegedly tampering evidences.
5. However, both of them were later granted bail by the special court as the CBI did not file a supplementary chargesheet against them within 90 days after they were arrested.
6. On November 4, 2024, the complete process of framing charges against Sanjay Roy at the special court was completed. The trial started on November 11.
7. The CBI recorded statements of 50 witnesses were recorded, including statements from parents of the victim, investigating officials, forensic experts and some doctors and colleagues of the deceased.
8. The doctors and common people from all of the country protested against the case. The people raised the issue of women and medical staff safety in the country, demanding justice.
The parents of the deceased alleged that the probe into the case was incomplete. They stated that the others involved in the case were roaming free. However, they stated that they will continue their fight until the justice is served.
"Sanjay (Roy) is guilty, and tomorrow's verdict will be against him. But what about other criminals who are still not caught? I can see them roaming freely. I have seen them loitering in the hospital. So, the investigation is half-done," mother of the victim was quoted as saying by PTI.
