Right To Disconnect Bill: NCP-SP MP Supriya Sule has introduced a Private Members’ Bill in the Lok Sabha, proposing that the employees should be allowed to not entertain work-related emails or calls after the work hours. She stated that the employees deal with several issues, including sleep deprivation, stress, and mental breakdown due to the overwork. The Right to Disconnect Bill, introduced by Supriya Sule, proposes that the workers should have the right to not answer such calls or emails to maintain their work-life balance. The bill has been introduced amid the demands from the employees to bring strict regulations to ensure rights for them.

While introducing the bill, the NCP-SP MP stated that the employees live under constant pressure to respond to mail and calls, severely affecting their health. “Studies have found that if an employee is expected to be available round the clock, they tend to exhibit risks of overwork like sleep deprivation, developing stress, and being emotionally exhausted," Sule stated.

"This persistent urge to respond to calls and e-mails (termed as ‘telepressure’), constant checking of e-mails throughout the day, and even on weekends and holidays, is reported to have destroyed to work-life balance of employees,” she added.

Work-Life Balance: Priority For Gen Z

A massive row erupted after several business tycoons, such as Infosys founder Narayana Murthy, stated that the employees must work for more than 90 hours per week to ensure the country's growth. However, the young employees opposed his idea by stating that there must be a balance between work and personal space. They also cited several reports suggesting that the number of working hours did not directly affect the productivity.

The young employees, especially post COVID pandemic, have also been demanding fixed working hours and other facilities, including work from home, health and life insurance, and regular breaks.
