A five-year-old girl suffered severe injuries after two Rottweiler dogs attacked her in Chennai on Sunday. The incident occurred at a public park in the Thousand Lights area when the girl, whose father works as a security guard at the park, was playing. The parents of the child alleged that the owner of the dog did not intervene till they rushed to save her.

The five-year-old girl, identified as Sudaksha, is hospitalised and undergoing treatment at a hospital. Police arrested the owner of the dogs under charges of negligence and stated that the owner had not sterilised the Rottweilers. Two others who look after the dogs were also named as accused in the case.

The incident was recorded on a CCTV camera in the park which captured the two dogs attacking the girl, fatally injuring her. Police have launched an investigation and said that further action would be taken accordingly.

The incident again ignited debates about the suitability of keeping ‘ferocious breeds’ of dogs in residential areas. In response to growing concerns, the central government in March urged state authorities to prohibit the sale and breeding of 23 aggressive dog breeds, such as the Pitbull Terrier, American Bulldog, Rottweiler and Mastiffs.

The government’s order stipulated that owners of these dogs must immediately have them sterilised. The Animal Husbandry Department has acknowledged receiving appeals from community groups and animal rights organisations, advocating for restrictions on owning certain dog breeds as household pets.
