Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Saturday held two closed-door meetings in Gorakhpur. The meetings lasted nearly 30 minutes each and reportedly discussed the poll debacle in UP. Bhagwant is in Gorakhpur for a four-day event.
Adityanath first met Bhagwat on Saturday afternoon at a school in the Campierganj area, where Bhagwat attended a meeting and a Sangh event. Later, around 8:30 pm, the chief minister visited the Saraswati Shishu Mandir in the Pakkibagh locality for another round of discussions with the RSS chief, according to the Indian Express.
A senior BJP leader, linked with the RSS, said Bhagwat’s visit days after the recently-concluded Lok Sabha elections was not a routine one. “Bhagwat was meant to hold discussions with Adityanath over the key reasons behind the debacle in Uttar Pradesh, where the BJP was seen to be in a strong position,” HT cited him as saying.
Notably, the BJP won 33 of 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh. The Samajwadi Party-Congress alliance won 43 seats in the key state. Moreover, the saffron party suffered defeat in Faizabad (Ayodhya) seat, where a grand Ram Temple was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Also, speculations are rife that all is not well between the RSS and BJP. Several senior leaders of Sangh, including Mohan Bhagwat, have made certain remarks which people believed were to school BJP. Bhagwant, while addressing an event in Nagpur, said decorum was not maintained by political parties during Lok Sabha poll campaign. He said a true sevak (one who serves people) is never arrogant and maintains decorum in public life.
Bharwat also gave reference to Manipur strife in his speech, asserting that the violence-torn state had been waiting for peace for over a year now.“Manipur has been looking for peace for a year now. It should be discussed on priority. The state had been peaceful for the past 10 years. It felt like the old 'gun culture' had come to a demise. It is still burning in the fire of the sudden tension that rose there or that was made to rise there. Who will pay attention to that? It is the duty to prioritise it and take note of it,” news agency ANI quoted him as saying.
Besides, senior RSS leader Indresh Kumar said the BJP failed to attain a majority on its own due to its ‘arrogance’.
