A ruckus erupted in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly in Srinagar today after Engineer Rashid's brother and MLA Khurshid Ahmad Sheikh displayed a banner advocating for the restoration of Article 370. The provision, which had granted special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, was revoked by the Centre in August 2019.

The resolution seeking restoration of Articles 370 and 35 A was initially introduced by PDP leader Waheed Para, who represents Pulwama. However, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah dismissed the resolution as “symbolic,” suggesting that it was introduced more for public attention than with genuine intent. The party has now passed a fresh resolution over the issue.

Following the incident, Khurshid Sheikh said, "This is completely legal. We wanted to bring a resolution over Article 370, but we were not given a chance. So, what other option did we have? The banner talked about (abrogation of) Article 370 and Article 35A, which we condemn. But this did not go down well with the BJP. Even if they continue to attack us we will continue to raise our voices."
This comes a day after Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary tabled a resolution urging the restoration of the erstwhile state's special status.
"That this legislative assembly reaffirms the importance of the special status and constitutional guarantees, which safeguarded the identity, culture, and rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, and expresses concern over their unilateral removal," the resolution moved by Choudhary and later passed by the House said.
