External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday said that the current interim government in Bangladesh is expected to safeguard the minorities in the country. Jaishankar was answering a supplementary question asked by AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi over the issues pertaining to the neighbouring country.
EAM Jaishankar expressed concerns over the treatment of minorities in Bangladesh is a matter of concern. He further said that maintaining the security and safety of the minorities is in Bangladesh's own interest.
His statement follows an incident where a Bangladeshi student swam across a river to enter India illegally, and a 17-year-old Hindu girl fled overnight to the Indian side, reportedly escaping persecution for being an ISKCON devotee.

Earlier this week, Bangladesh acknowledged 88 incidents of communal violence against minorities since the ousting of the democratic government of Sheikh Hasina in August this year. The majority of attacks came against the minority Hindus in the country, with followers of ISKCON remaining the target in the country.
Shafiqul Alam, press secretary to interim government chief Muhammad Yunus, stated that authorities have arrested 70 individuals in connection with the incidents.
