Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan has returned home after recovering from injuries sustained in an attack by an intruder, who had broken into his Bandra residence with the intention of robbing him. The Mumbai Police have arrested a Bangladeshi national after a days-long manhunt.

The accused, identified as Shariful Islam Shehzad, had been planning to flee to Bangladesh via Howrah when he realised he was being pursued by the police, according to NDTV, citing police sources. He attempted to purchase a train ticket to Howrah, but travel agents demanded an inflated price. Before he could make his way to Howrah, Shariful was apprehended in Thane.

Sequence Of Events

The intruder was taken to Saif’s home to recreate the crime scene. The police discovered that Shehzad had entered the actor’s house by scaling the compound wall. After finding that the guards were asleep, the accused entered the compound, used the back staircase, and climbed through an air-conditioning duct to enter Saif’s home via a bathroom window. 

According to Shariful's statement to the police, he had removed his shoes and stored them in his bag to avoid making any noise. He also switched off his phone, as confirmed by details obtained by NDTV.

After a scuffle, Saif and his house helpers locked Shariful in a room. However, Shariful managed to escape through the air-conditioning duct and fled down the stairs. The police have recovered his face cover from the room of the actor’s younger son, Jahangir, where he had a confrontation with the actor. 

What Happened Inside The House

Eliyama Philip, a nanny for Saif's sons, told the police that she was the first person to spot the intruder. She said she woke up upon hearing a sound from the actor’s son Jeh’s room. However, she paid no attention, believing it was Kareena checking on her son. When she heard the noise again, she went outside and discovered that an intruder had entered the house. She added that the attacker struck her with a blade when she rushed to pick up Jeh.

In her statement, quoted by NDTV, Philip explained that she asked him, "What do you want?" He responded by saying, "I want money." She then asked, "How much do you want?" and he answered in English, "One crore."

Saif and Kareena rushed out of their room upon hearing the scream. Saif had a scuffle with him and the intruder hit him with a wooden object and the hexa blade "Saif Sir somehow managed to get away from him and we all ran out of the room and pulled the door of the room," she said, adding that everyone then went to the upper floor of their home. The intruder later escaped, she has said. 

Saif suffered six stab injuries and was taken to Lilavati Hospital. A 5-mm blade was removed from his back after surgery.

How Accused Got Arrested

The Mumbai Police formed over 30 teams to track down the intruder and scanned several CCTV footage to identify him. The suspect was spotted in footage from Andheri’s DN Nagar. The police then visited his rented accommodation to gather more information. During the manhunt, multiple people were questioned. Ultimately, the police apprehended him in Thane.
