Saket Building Collapse: Saket Building Collapse: Relief and rescue operations are continuing even 48 hours after the building collapse in South Delhi’ Saket area. Officials said it may take more than 24 hours to completely remove the debris from the five-storey commercial structure Saidulajab village. The NDRF, Fire Department, Delhi Police, and other agencies have been working jointly at the site since the accident. A hydra crane and two large cranes have been deployed to remove the debris. About 55 truckloads of debris have been removed so far, jagran.com reported.
According to NDRF officials, people were reported to be present in the canteen adjacent to the building at the time of the accident. Therefore, the initial priority for rescue teams was to remove the debris that had fallen on the canteen as quickly as possible. Officials stated that the debris in the canteen area has been completely cleared and no one has been found there since Sunday evening.
Currently, debris is spread over an area of approximately 250 square yards. According to officials, the rescue operation is facing several challenges. Space at the site is limited, and a nearby building has tilted since the accident. It has been supported with jacks to prevent collapse.
Additional girders have been ordered to protect surrounding structures during the rescue operation and prevent any potential accidents. Due to limited space, multiple cranes are unable to operate simultaneously. As debris is removed and space is created, the rescue effort is accelerating.
Many People Still Missing
The five-story building that collapsed housed several offices. Most offices are closed on Saturdays and Sundays, but some offices remain open to employees and other visitors. Local residents claim that many people were present in the building at the time of the accident. This raises concerns that some people may still be buried under the debris.
Dr Jaswant Singh Yadav, President of the Foreign Medical Graduates Association, said that several people are still missing, whose mobile phones are still located at the scene. Therefore, they may be beneath the debris. Officials said that during the rescue operation, efforts are being made to ensure that the debris does not sink downward, so that any survivors trapped within remain safe.
Saidulajab Is A Hub For Students Preparing For UPSC, SSC, FMGE
Over the past few years, Saidulajab Village has emerged as a major hub for students preparing for UPSC, SSC, FMGE, and other competitive exams. Its proximity to the Saket Metro Station and the availability of rooms, PGs, and flats at relatively low rents has led to a large number of students residing here.
The area is home to numerous libraries, co-working spaces, internet cafes, and small restaurants that cater to students. The scene has changed since Saturday evening's accident. What used to be bustling with activity is now deserted. Locals said the accident has created an atmosphere of fear and anxiety.
