Sandakphu Snowfall: West Bengal's highest peak, Sandakphu today received May's first snowfall, covering the region with a white sheet of snow. Earlier, it received unseasonal snowfall on April 28.
Sandakphu, which lies at an altitude of 3,636 metres, is well known for its magnificent views of the Kanchenjunga and Everest peaks.
Visuals shared by a Facebook user show the snow-covered Sandakphu peak with all its beauty.
Unusual for this season, the snowfall is part of a broader pattern of erratic weather that is affecting the Himalayas.
This shift in weather is attributed by experts to the effects of global climate change, which is changing long-standing weather patterns in the mountainous region.
Sikkim Snowfall Chaos
Hundreds of visitors have been stuck, travel plans have been delayed, and state authorities have canceled all travel permits to high-altitude districts due to Sikkim's severe snowfall situation.
Key tourist locations including Nathula Pass, Tsomgo Lake, and Lachung have been tucked by the unexpected and heavy snowfall over the past few days, resulting in landslides, road closures, and hazardous weather that necessitated emergency responses.
Rescue teams from the Indian Army, Sikkim Police, and the Border Roads Organization (BRO) put forth a lot of effort on April 27 and 28 to get visitors out of locations that were stuck in the snow. Due to persistent snow and limited visibility, more than 1,200 travellers were trapped close to Tsomgo Lake and Nathula Pass, but were rescued.
