The Supreme Court of India reprimanded Tribal Welfare minister of Madhya Pradesh, Vijay Shah, for his remark against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi. Slamming BJP leader, the top court asked, “What sort of statements are you making.” The Bench of CJI BR Gavai and Justice AG Masih on Thursday observed, "Holding a constitutional position, you should have exercised a degree of restraint, especially when country is undergoing such a situation."

The apex court agreed to hear the Shah’s plea seeking stay on the FIR against him, but refused to stop the ongoing proceedings in Madhya Pradesh High Court. Taking suo motu cognizance in the case, the MP High Court had ordered FIR against the minister.

The BJP minister had moved to the top court, demanding stay, after the HC ordered FIR against him. The case is now scheduled for hearing on May 16. "What sort of statements are you making. You are a responsible minister of the government," the CJI told Shah's counsel.

Shah drew widespread backlash from military veterans to opposition leaders, following his controversial remark against colonel Sofiya Qureshi, who was the part of daily briefing on Army actions amid standoff between India and Pakistan.

Shah, while addressing a public gathering during a government function in Mhow of Indore, lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for conducting Operation Sindoor to avenge the killings in the Pahalgam terror attack. As he talked about Operation Sindoor, Shah drew parallels between Colonel Qureshi and those who carried out the Pahalgam terror attack, saying that ‘PM Modi sent their sister’ to avenge the killings.

In his speech on Monday, Shah had said: “India taught a lesson to those responsible for the Pahalgam terror attack using a sister from their own community (unki samaaj ki behen ke zariye).” He repeated the same three times, without mentioning Qureshi’s name.
