'She Brought Bad Energy': South Delhi Doctor Beats, Stabs Domestic Help To Death; Domestic Workers Protest

A shocking murder in South Delhi's upscale Mount Kailash area has sent shockwaves through the neighbourhood after a 50-year-old domestic worker was allegedly killed by her employer, a dermatologist, who claimed she brought "bad energy" into his home.

The accused, Dr Manish Gupta, was arrested after allegedly attacking his long-time domestic worker, Meena Haldar, with a cricket bat and a sharp weapon inside his residence on Thursday. When taken into custody, Gupta reportedly said, "Hang me."  

What Police Say

During questioning, Gupta allegedly told investigators that he had repeatedly asked his family to remove Haldar from her job, but his requests were ignored.

"He told us that he wanted Meena to be removed from the job, but his family members refused to do so. He was upset and felt bad that nobody listened to him. He also told us that he suspected that Meena was bringing bad energy to the house, and this affected his son’s studies," a senior police officer who refused to be named told HT.

Another officer added, "The doctor felt hurt that nobody in his family was listening to him and attacked the domestic help when he found her on the terrace."

How The Crime Unfolded

According to police, Gupta had been living with his wife, Dr Tina Gupta, and son in the flat. Dr Tina Gupta had stepped out to go to work on Thursday morning around 10:15 am.

Sources privy to the probe said Haldar came into the apartment between 10:30 am and 10:45 am, did her daily chores at home and went on the terrace to hang her clothes. Gupta is said to have followed her and brutally assaulted her between 11:15 am and 11:30 am.

Investigators said that he beat her with a bat on the head, and after she fell, stabbed her multiple times with a knife. He then walked down the stairs and threw the two blood-stained weapons, the bat and the knife, near a staircase.

The body was spotted by a neighbour of Haldar’s in the building next to his flat, who found the bleeding body and called up the police to file a PCR.

Family Demands Answers

Haldar, who lived in the nearby Prakash Mohalla area, is survived by her husband, son Robin and daughter-in-law Saptami.

Remembering his mother, Robin said she had spent years working hard to support the family. “I can't believe my mother has been murdered. What harm could she have done to anyone? When I arrived at the doctor's house, the police wouldn't let me see his mother's body. I don't understand what anyone could gain by killing my mother," Robin said.

"She never took leave; she always showed up on time. She always listened to them (Guptas). Why did they do this?" he added. According to family members, Haldar had been employed by the Gupta family for nearly 10 to 12 years and often spoke positively about them.

Protest By Domestic Workers

News of the killing sparked outrage among domestic workers in the area. More than 50 workers gathered outside the apartment complex and staged a protest demanding justice.

Tensions briefly flared when protesters were prevented from seeing the victim's body. Police later escorted Haldar's son to AIIMS for identification and further formalities. The investigation is ongoing.
