Kalka-Shimla heritage train: The Indian Railways has announced a 14-day blockage of the Jutog Summer Hill section, affecting the Kalka-Shimla train service. From May 30 to June 12, trains will only operate up to Tara Devi, leaving passengers to find alternative transportation to reach Shimla.
The blockage is part of a major repair effort aimed at strengthening the railway track in the Jutog Summer Hill section.
Passengers are expected to face challenges due to the blockage, particularly given the traffic congestion on the Kalka-Shimla road. The disruption will require travellers to plan ahead and look for alternative routes or modes of transportation to reach their destinations.
The Railways have emphasised that the blockage is essential for ensuring the safety and stability of the track.
A cloudburst and heavy rains in August 2023 damaged the Kalka-Shimla railway track, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A part of the hill between Jutog and Summer Hill stations collapsed, washing away a large section of the track.
About seven trains run on this route every day. After the incident, train services between Kandaghat and Shimla were stopped. Later, a train started running after a temporary fix, but permanent fixes are now underway. The railways recently granted a ₹2.95 crore contract to repair the track.
