In the latest development on language row around Kamal Haasan’s remark on Kannada language, the Karnataka High Court on Friday observed that Tamil megastar Kamal Haasan has not issued an apology for his remark yet and ordered the producer of his film ‘Thug Life’ to respond to an application that Kannada Sahitya Parishat had filed.
The application filed by the Kannada Sahitya Parishat sought intervention in producers’ pleas against the ban of the film ‘Thug Life’. The Parishat’s application intended to put before the court how Haasan’s statement sparked the constitutional, cultural, and linguistic concerns, particularly from the perspective of preserving the identity, dignity and historical legacy of the Kannada language and culture.

During a film promotional event in Tamil Nadu, ‘Thug Life’ actor said that Kannada was born out of the Tamil language, igniting widespread criticism and a film boycott.
The remark led to a huge controversy, and Karnataka leaders and the Film Chamber of the state demanded that the actor withdraw his statement and tender an apology. However, he declined to apologise and opted against releasing the movie in Karnataka on June 5, when it was released worldwide.
The Raj Kamal Production house applied on Friday that the actor would need a week to file objections against the impleadment application of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat.
Justice M Nagaprasanna, who heard the case, has scheduled the matter for June 20. When the matter came to the court on June 3, the counsel of the production house stated that an apology was not warranted and they would not insist on screening of the movie in the state until the matter is solved through dialogue.
