Two retired soldiers were killed by 10 to 12 assailants who fired 35 rounds indiscriminately at Lath-Jauli Chowk on Sonipat-Gohana highway on Friday morning. A resident of Jauli village, who was standing near the victims was also injured by the attackers who came on bikes and cars. Police have registered an FIR against five named accused and an investigation is underway.
The two deceased were identified as Raj Singh and Ramesh, who were related to each other as grandfather and grandson. They were going to Sonipath to seek the transfer of their sons, Vicky and Vijay who are in jail for the murder of a youth named Suraj of Lath village five months ago, on April 22. The police suspect that the attack was revenge for Suraj’s murder.

According to the complaint filed by Manjeet, Raj Singh’s grandson, the incident happened around 10:15 am when Raj Singh and Ramesh were standing near a Hanuman temple in a village square and talking. The attackers arrived on the scene and opened fire without giving them a chance to escape. Raj Singh and Ramesh were hit multiple times and died on the spot. Gurcharan was shot in the leg and taken to a nearby hospital.

The police reached the spot and recovered about 35 cartridges. DCP Bharti Dabas, ACP Sombir and Sadar police station in-charge Wazir Singh are leading the investigation. The police have named Deepak, Monu, Amit, Dharampal and Ranbir as the accused in the FIR and have initiated an investigation to apprehend them.
