As Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a bilateral meeting on Sunday on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in China's Tianjin, Congress took a swipe at the prime minister, accusing him of not standing up against Beijing.

In a post on X, Congress mocked PM Modi, saying that the prime minister took strict action against the Chinese nefarious actions by smiling and shaking hands with its president.

Recalling the Galwan Valley clashes of 2020 and Operation Sindoor, Congress said, "China took the lives of our 20 brave soldiers in the Galwan Valley. During Operation Sindoor, China was openly supporting Pakistan. China provided live updates to Pakistan".

The grand old party further added, "In response to these nefarious actions by China, Narendra Modi took strict measures. He shook hands with the Chinese President with a smile".

Congress's criticism of Modi govenment on China

Congress has been critical of the PM Modi-led government for its dealings with China. The Congress has time and again accused the government of failing to stand up to Chinese aggression.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has alleged that the government has kept mum while Beijing has captured 2,000 square km of the Indian territory.

The Congress leader had even felt a blow after he made a controversial statement against the Indian Army while trying to target the government over Chinese border aggression. Despite this, the party has let the guns blaze against the government.

What happened in Modi-Xi bilateral?

During the meeting, Jinping said that it is the "right choice" for the two countries to be "friends" and they should not let the border dispute define their relations.

He said, "It is the right choice for both to be friends who have good neighbourly and amicable ties, partners who enable each other's success, and to have the dragon and the elephant dance together".

About the meeting Ministry of External Affairs said both leaders agreed that India and China are partners rather than rivals, with shared domestic development goals taking priority.
