Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed strict action against those with an alleged pro-Pakistan stand in the wake of a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam. So far, 14 people have been arrested across the state, including an MLA and a student.
The student at the computer science department in the Assam University was arrested by the Silchar Police on Thursday after the university's ABVP unit filed a complaint against him over a controversial Facebook post.
The officials said that he was arrested over a complaint alleging the use of inflammatory and communally inciting content on social media regarding the Pahalgam terror attack.
"He is currently in police custody and will be produced before a court in due course. We are investigating the matter," he added on Friday.
The post was later deleted by the student, and in another post, he tendered an apology, saying he did not intend to offend anyone.
On Saturday, CM Sarma said that NSA will be imposed on the individuals if needed. "There are no similarities between Bharat and Pakistan. The two countries are enemy nations and we must remain like that," CM Sarma said.
An activist was also arrested on Friday for similar comments. CM Sarma said a leader of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti was apprehended on Friday for his ‘anti-India comment' and warned that anyone who takes such a stance will be arrested.
The string of arrests started with the AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam. During a press meet, CM Sarma had said that the opposition legislator Islam was arrested on sedition charges for allegedly defending Pakistan and its complicity in the Pahalgam terror attack, Sarma had said during a press meet.
Meanwhile, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal has condemned Animul Islam's remarks, adding that his statement was his own and does not reflect the party's stand. Ajmal said, "I heard about the arrest of Animul Islam for his remarks on the Pahalgam terrorist attack. It is very unfortunate that he made such a statement. At this crucial time, we stand united with the government of India."
Notably, 26 tourists were killed based on their religious identities by the Pakistan-based terrorists in Baisaran Valley in Pahalgam. The security forces have subsequently intensified their operation in the valley.
