Sukhbir Singh Badal, the former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Wednesday. He was saved by two Punjab Police personnel who acted swiftly during the attack. After the incident, Badal expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the two officers for their bravery on social media.

Sukhbir Badal of the Shiromani Akali Dal posted pictures of ASIs Jasbir Singh and Hira Singh on the platform X (formerly Twitter). In his post, he wrote: “Risking your life to save someone’s life is not an easy task. ASI Jasbir Singh and ASI Hira Singh have both been a part of our family since the days of Sr. Parkash Singh Badal. My family and I can never repay the courage and loyalty they showed yesterday. May God bless them with a long life, good health, and all happiness.”

The assassination attempt occurred two days ago when ex-Khalistani terrorist Narain Singh Chaura fired at Badal from close range near the entrance of the Golden Temple. Fortunately, the attacker missed, and Badal was unharmed. ASI Jasbir Singh immediately recognised the threat to Badal and acted decisively by tackling the shooter, grabbing his hands, and pushing him away. With help from other security personnel, the attacker was subdued.

The entire incident was captured by media personnel covering Badal’s second day of performing sewa (religious service) at the Golden Temple. Interestingly, this service was part of his tankhah (religious penance) for mistakes made during the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) government in Punjab from 2007 to 2017.

Following the assassination attempt, former militant Narain Singh Chaura, who had tried to kill Badal during his tankhah duties at the Golden Temple, was apprehended and placed in three-day police custody on Thursday.

Further investigation is ongoing. Amritsar Police Commissioner Bhullar stated that authorities are exploring all angles, including whether any organisation was involved, or if the attack was an attempt to “gain sympathy.”
