In a latest development in cough syrup deaths across multiple states, the Supreme Court of India on Friday dismissed the PIL of the petitioner demanding a CBI probe into the several child deaths allegedly caused by the consumption of contaminated cough syrup in MP and Rajasthan. The bench dismissed the plea soon after a brief hearing.
Here’s What Happened In Court
The petitioner, advocate Vishal Tiwari, reminded the bench headed by the Chief Justice of India, BR Gavai, that the incident was not the first or isolated case when adulteration in medicine was found. He argued that a CBI probe should be ordered as states are blaming each other instead of taking action.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the government, told the bench that state governments like Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu will take action in the matter.

Tiwari claimed that even after several deaths had occurred, there was no proper lab test or clinical trial done.
Why SC Dismissed CBI Probe Plea In Cough Syrup
While the hearing was going on, the Solicitor General, Mehta, informed the bench that the petitioner often comes with pleas. Mehta added that although all institutions are in place, whenever something happens, he reads newspapers and comes here.
The information received by Mehta led to SC asking Tiwari about the number of pleas he has filed. To which the petitioner replied that he had filed eight to ten PILs, the bench dismissed his plea afterwards.
Plea Demanded Retired SC Judge To Monitor Probe
Additionally, the petition demanded that a retired Supreme Court judge should monitor the probe and inquiry into the manufacture, regulation, testing, and distribution of contaminated cough syrups.
Deaths Due To Consumption Of ‘Cough Syrup’
The consumption of toxic cough syrup led to the deaths of around 20 children in MP, few others in Rajasthan. Tamil Nadu’s Health Minister announced that Ranganathan’s company license will be permanently cancelled within a few days. Chennai police later arrested pharmaceutical company owner Ranganathan, the key accused in the case.
