A horrific incident took place at Faridabad’s Surajkund fair on Saturday after an amusement ride came crashing down, claiming 19 lives. Amongst those who died was Inspector Jagdish Prasad, who tried to rescue people at the fairgrounds. Inspector Prasad sustained a head injury during the evacuation process and was immediately taken to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Praising Prasad’s bravery and calmness in that tense situation, Haryana’s Director General of Police (DGP) Ajay Singhal said that despite facing extremely challenging and risky circumstances, Inspector Prasad prioritised the safety of others over his own. “Thanks to the officer’s promptness and bravery, several lives were saved, showcasing the highest traditions of police service,” the DGP said. He further said that Prasad’s contributions and dedication would continue to inspire others and that his passing represents an irreparable loss for the police department.
He expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family and assured them that the department stands firmly with them during this difficult time and will provide all possible assistance.
Additionally, Prasad’s family would receive a policy amount of Rs 1 crore, along with other benefits. The DGP assured that the Haryana Police would extend all possible support to the bereaved family.
The DGP later visited the hospital to check on those injured in the incident and reviewed their condition with the attending doctors. He assured the victims that the state government and the police department were fully committed to their care and instructed officials to ensure that treatment was provided without any lapse, the statement said.
He also instructed the doctors and hospital administration to ensure the availability of all necessary resources so that the treatment process remains swift and effective.
Who Is Inspector Jagdish Prasad?
Born in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, Inspector Jagdish Prasad served in the Haryana Armed Police, a special armed unit of the state police which was in reserve. Prasad has been serving in the state police force since 1989 and was due to retire in March after completing 36 years in the police force. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son. All three of them are students and are unmarried.
Prasad’s younger brother, Pradeep, is a teacher and lives in their native village with his father Surajmal and mother Shanti Devi. His older brother Satish Chandra works at a chemical factory in Ballabgarh, while his other brother Chandrabhan Singh works at a motor company in Faridabad.
