Surat News: A controversy has erupted in Surat after a video showing a non-vegetarian party being organised on the premises of a government-run primary school went viral on social media. The incident took place at Primary School No. 342 in the Godadara area of the city and led to the suspension of the school principal.
According to officials, the event was held on Sunday afternoon and appeared to be a reunion of students who had studied at the school between 1987 and 1991. A banner written in Telugu was displayed at the school’s entrance during the gathering. The video showed attendees consuming chicken and mutton dishes inside the school premises, sparking public outrage once it spread online.
According to a NDTV report, the Surat Municipal Corporation’s Primary Education Committee (PEC), which manages the school, immediately ordered an inquiry into the matter. Following the investigation, principal Prabhakar Eligatin was suspended for allegedly allowing the non-vegetarian event to be held without official permission.
Committee chairman Rajendra Kapadia described the incident as unacceptable, stating that such an act tarnished the image of the education department. “This is a condemnable act. Non-vegetarian food was served on the school premises without any permission. The principal has been suspended, and a departmental inquiry will follow,” he said.
In his defence, the suspended principal claimed that the reunion was organised by former students and he had no involvement in arranging or serving the food. Eligatin said that the event was initially planned at a farmhouse but was shifted to the school at the last moment due to unforeseen issues.
“It was a get-together of old students and some had come from abroad. They brought non-veg dishes from outside. I was not present when the food was served,” he told reporters.
Authorities confirmed that a detailed departmental probe has been initiated to determine the responsibility of the principal and other individuals involved in the event.
