Sushant Singh Rajput Death Case: CBI Files Closure Report Four Years After Actor's Death

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a closure report in Sushant Singh Rajput’s death case four years after the actor’s death, the PTI reported. The CBI has submitted its findings before a special court in Mumbai which will now decide whether to accept the report or order further probe by the agency, news agency PTI reported, citing an official.

In its conclusive medico-legal opinion to the CBI, forensic specialists at AIIMS had dismissed the claims of "poisoning and strangling" made in the case. His postmortem report stated the cause of death was asphyxia. The postmortem was conducted at Mumbai's Cooper Hospital.

34-year-old actor Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead at his Bandra residence on June 14, 2020, creating a huge controversy, with the probe later being handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation. The Mumbai police’s initial investigation found suicide as the cause of the death. Investigators had found no evidence of forced entry, and the preliminary findings suggested that depression could have been a contributing factor. 

The investigation was handed over to CBI from Bihar police after a case of abetment of suicide was registered following a complaint from the actor’s father in Patna. A complaint from Sushant’s family was filed in Bihar against the actor’s rumoured girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty and others, alleging abetment to suicide, theft, cheating, and wrongful confinement. This led to a jurisdictional dispute between the Bihar Police and the Mumbai Police, as the latter had initially been handling the investigation. The Supreme Court of India on August 19, 2020, directed the CBI to take over the case and investigate the matter with full authority.

The actor was last seen in director Mukesh Chhabra's Dil Bechara opposite Sanjana Sanghi, which was the official remake of the novel The Fault in Our Stars. The film was released on OTT.
