In a major incident, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s Personal Assistant, Chandranath Rath, was shot dead in Madhyamgram of West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district.
According to the information, multiple rounds were fired targeting Rath, after which he died on the spot. The assailants are reported to have arrived on a bike. They opened fire at Rath, who was sitting inside a black Scorpio.
Soon after the information was received, a large police force reached the area.
Miscreants stopped his car, shot from point blank range
According to the information, the miscreants stopped Chandranath's car at around 8:30 pm, when he was coming from the direction of Dohariya in Madhyamgram. The miscreants opened fire at him from point-blank range.
Chandranath was shot in the head, chest, and abdomen. He was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Madhyamgram, where doctors declared him dead. Police are investigating the incident.
The driver of the car was also shot in the attack. As his condition is critical, he has been shifted to a hospital in Kolkata.
Who was Chandranath Rath?
Chandranath . After retiring from there, he started working as a very close assistant to Suvendu Adhikari.
Chandranath reportedly played an active role in campaigning for Adhikari in the recent high-voltage elections for the Bhabanipur assembly constituency.
The incident came on the heels of the results of the West Bengal Assembly Elections, wherein the BJP registered a resounding victory. Adhikari himself won two seats, his home turf, Nandigram and against Mamata Benrjee in Bhabanipur.
The area of Madhyamagram, where the incident took place, is an assembly constituency. Trinamool's Rathin Ghosh had won from the seat by a narrow margin of 2,399 votes
The incidents related to post-poll violence have also sppiked since the results were announced on May 4. Over 200 cases have been filed and 433 people have been arrested so far.
