Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari scripted history after taking oath as the first saffron party chief minister of West Bengal on Saturday. Governor RN Ravi administered the oath of office and secrecy to Adhikari at a grand ceremony held at the Brigade Parade Grounds in Kolkata in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, chief ministers of NDA-ruled states and senior BJP leaders.

Suvendu Adhikari's Education

Adhikari, born on December 15, 1970, in Karkuli, Purba Medinipur, West Bengal, belongs to a political family that has a deep-rooted tradition in public service. Growing up in the Medinipur region, the BJP leader completed his initial study at the Contai High School, Purba Medinipur. Later, Adhikari pursued studies through Netaji Subhas Open University. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) from Pravat Kumar College (affiliated with Vidyasagar University), Contai. The BJP leader completed his post-graduation with a Master of Arts (M.A.) from Rabindra Bharati University.

Adhikari, who is fondly called "Bhumiputra" (son of the soil) by his supporters, remained committed to working for people, especialy in rural Bengal. As he defeated his former boss, Mamata Banerjee, twice in a row in the assembly elections 2021 and 2026, he is now dubbed as a giant slayer.

Suvendu Adhikari's Family Members

Father: Suvendu Adhikari's father is Sisir Adhikari, who is a veteran politician in the state. He was a Union Minister in the Manmohan Singh government. He deserted the TMC leader and joined the BJP after his son defected to the saffron party in late 1990s.

Mother: His mother is Gayatri Adhikari.

Brothers: Adhikari's brothers, Dibyendu Adhikari and Soumendu Adhikari, are also politicians. Dibyendu is a former TMC MP from Tamluk Lok Sabha constituency, who later joined the BJP. Soumendu is a BJP MP who won the Kanthi seat in the Lok Sabha elections 2024.

Suvendu Adhikari's Early Career

Adhikari joined politics at an early age, following footprint of his father. Adhikari began his political journey with the Congress, registering his first electoral victory by becoming a councillor for the Kanthi Municipality in 1995. Later, he joined Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress in 1998. In 2020, he joined the BJP over a power struggle within the TMC.
