As the lotus-themed saffron party rose to power, sweet shops in the lanes of Bengal started molding lotus-shaped Sandesh, symbolising the Bharatiya Janata Party's win for the first time ever in West Bengal. Visuals shared online showed trays of intricately designed sweets resembling blooming lotuses.

The shops were soon crowded by customers buying the Sandesh as a part of celebration in the state. As per news agency PTI, the sweets were particularly made by local confectioners to mark the occasion. The event marks the traditional significance of Sandesh in Bengal and how it becomes a part of expressing happiness and celebrating it.

Bengal Election For The First Time

The BJP won the 2026 Assembly elections with an unthinkable majority of 207 seats, while the TMC won 80 seats. The historic victory ended the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress and proved to be a major setback for the green party.

BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the first-ever Bharatiya Janata Party Chief Minister after defeating Mamata Banerjee in her Bhabanipur stronghold during the Assembly elections 2026. Along with Adhikari, senior BJP leaders Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Kshudiram Tudu, and Nisith Pramanik have also taken an oath as cabinet ministers on Saturday. The day coincides with the birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday officially announced Suvendu Adhikari as the next Chief Minister of West Bengal. In the polls, the BJP secured 207 seats, while the TMC won 80 seats.

The BJP wrote a historic victory in the just-held Assembly elections, ending the TMC’s 15-year rule and dealing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee one of the biggest setbacks of her political career. On Tuesday (May 5, 2026), Trinamool chairperson Mamata Banerjee said she would not resign as Chief Minister, alleging that the verdict was the result of a “conspiracy” rather than the people’s mandate.
