Six passengers in a SWISS flight suffered injuries after the aircraft aborted the takeoff run at Delhi airport following an engine fire incident in the early hours of Sunday, officials said.
Passengers and crew were evacuated using emergency slides. The wounded passengers were shiftedto Medanta hospital for treatment. The runway remains closed until the aircraft is removed.
The incident took place at around 1:08 am, when Flight No. LX147, an Airbus A330, started to take off. Suddenly, one of the engines of the aircraft failed and a fire broke out.
“We are aware of an incident involving flight LX147 in Delhi. The aircraft involved is an Airbus A330 (HB-JHK). SWISS has established a task force. There were 228 passengers and 4 infants on board. Shortly after takeoff, just after 1 am local time in India, an issue occurred with one of the engines. The crew rejected the takeoff and, following an assessment of the situation, decided as a precaution to evacuate the aircraft," the airline said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the Indira Gandhi International Airport mentioned that the flight operations will remain unaffected. Delhi. "In the early hours of this morning, a full emergency was declared at Delhi Airport involving Swiss International Airlines flight LX 147 (DEL-ZRH) on Runway 28/10. All prescribed safety protocols were promptly executed, and passengers were safely evacuated. Airport operations remained unaffected," the statement added.
No Crew Members Were Harmed
According to the airlines, none of the crew members suffered injuries. It stated that six passengers are currently receiving medical attention. "All passengers and crew (were) evacuated the aircraft via the emergency slides. Six passengers are currently undergoing medical evaluation. For a small number of individuals who were unable to use the slides, stairs were provided,” it added.
SWISS claimed that some passengers were not able to use the slides, the airlines therefore took them through the stairs. It also mentioned that passengers are currently being assisted and local teams are working intensively to arrange rebookings or hotel accommodation for passengers.
Inspections Are To Be Performed
The airlines clarified it is looking to investigate how the mishap had taken place. Its technical specialists will travel to Delhi to inspect the aircraft and take the next steps. "At the same time, we are working intensively to find swift and suitable onward travel solutions for all passengers. The safety of our passengers and our crew is always our top priority," the airline said.
